What is a CT scan?

A computed tomography (CT) scan, also known as a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan, is a type of imaging test that uses X-rays to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body. Apex Cardiology Consultants performs cardiac CT scans.

With a cardiac CT scan, the interventional cardiologists get detailed images of the structures and blood vessels in your heart. The test helps them find heart problems such as:

• Coronary artery disease (CAD)
• Buildup of calcium in the aorta (a sign of atherosclerosis)
• Heart valve problems
• Heart function problems
• Pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium)
• Pulmonary vein problems

Apex Cardiology Consultants may also perform a CT scan to monitor heart health following an interventional coronary procedure, such as balloon angioplasty and stenting or pacemaker implantation. 

A cardiac CT scan also assesses heart health following bypass surgery.

When do I need a CT scan?

Your provider at Apex Cardiology Consultants determines when you need a CT scan. They perform the noninvasive imaging test to screen for and diagnose heart problems and monitor the effectiveness of cardiac treatments.

Your provider may recommend a CT scan to diagnose CAD or assess heart health to determine the underlying cause of your shortness of breath or chest pain. 

What are the types of CT scans?

There are many types of CT scans. In general, the cardiac CT scan involves the rotation of an X-ray machine around your body. During this rotating movement, the X-ray machine takes pictures of your heart, and then a computer program combines those pictures to create a 3D image. 

Other types of cardiac CT scans may include additional steps, such as:

CT angiography

During CT angiography, your provider injects a contrast dye into your vein during the X-ray scan. 

Multidetector CT (MDCT) 

The MDCT is a rapid CT scan. Because your heart is in constant motion, capturing clear images can be difficult. With MDCT, the scan is so fast it can generate clear pictures. 

Electron beam CT (EBCT)

The EBCT is a type of CT scan Apex Cardiology Consultants uses to look for calcium in and around your coronary arteries.
